Mobile Technology

It is possible to imagine classrooms without teachers and pupils completely dependent on technology, just as it is possible to imagine supermarkets without staff!  Pupils are becoming more and more technology centred and so is teaching. It is also possible to imagine a world without classrooms at all where the pupils can simply access all learning materials through online technology whilst sitting at home.  Technology can be used anywhere at anytime. Many teachers are afraid of being replaced by technology as a way of cutting costs.  In Quillen’s article (2012), he refers to the Eagle County School district where foreign language teachers were replaced by online teaching.  Generally teachers weren’t happy with this decision saying that ‘replacing face to face instructors with a digital option… would not be as rich or as meaningful’ (Ian Quillen, 2012)

  1. Don't you think that you need a teacher there at all times to guide the learning? Some people much prefer having a teacher there to ask questions if they don't understand or they need a little help? The following quote shows a point of view which doesn't think that teachers will get replaced by technology. " Technology doesn’t teach, Teachers teach. But today, Teachers who don't use technology will be replaced by teachers who do. " (K,Snehansu.2013)

  2. Yes it is important to have a teacher there to guide the learning but as studies show there is no need for teachers at all times. Trisha Ainsa (2013) shows in her article how mobile technology can positively affect the pupils’ learning. In Auburn School district they use Ipads to increase literacy and numeracy skills. ‘Report study was that eight of sixteen kindergarten classrooms were randomly given Ipads for 9 weeks. The Ipad users showed increased improvement results over the non ipad group’ (Trisha Ainsa, 2013) with far less teacher input. What in particular do you think teachers can offer that technology can’t?

  3. A good relationship which has a lot of advantages I think that teachers can offer students that technology can’t. When there is a teacher present they can adapt tasks and the sessions to the different participations standard. “Good teachers inspire our young people to be lifelong learners, creating a culture of independent enquiry with their enthusiasm and passion.”(Wright,P.2013) This shows another reason why technology can’t replace teachers, teachers can motivate and change the way that students think which technology can’t. On the other hand I do believe that mobile learning can be extremely useful. For example using apps to complete tasks or to check for understanding after lessons, such as the apps like ‘coaching eye’, ‘socrative’,’ Revision App’, puzzle apps and so on. You can access these apps at all times and are very effective. By reading the following article you can clearly see the benefits of using mobile apps in the classroom.

It is clear that you think highly of the idea of technology in education but do you thing that there could be any disadvantages?

  4. Yes, of course, like any medium, there are disadvantages of using technology in the classroom. Small disadvantages would be the apps breaking down and adverts popping up constantly. Technology isn’t totally reliable, things can go wrong and crash. Very few teachers crash! The only major disadvantage I see is that constant use of technology could cut down on the amount of communication in the classroom.
I see technology not completely replacing teachers but replacing some of the teachers’ work. According to Michael Trucano ‘introducing new technologies will, however, replace some of the things that teachers do’ (Michael Trucano, 2015) which proves my point. Do you see the future like this?

  5. I see that technology will change the way that teachers may teach but I don’t see it replacing teachers. I do believe that mobile learning could be a very effective way of helping learning. But as you’ve stated above there are disadvantages. Adding to this, a lot of people think that having thing such as mobiles will take attention of the lessons away from the students and think they will miss use the mobiles by going on social media and so on. This is clear by reading this quote “This is probably the number one worry of teachers who consider implementing classroom technology: the concern that students will be too busy tweeting and Snapchatting to pay attention to the lesson.(Rosso,M.2016) But one of the main advantages of mobile learning is that it allows students to access work, information and the internet at any time. As a teacher it is possible to give tasks where students can independently go and find and figure out the answers of the tasks by using e-learning which will help the students throughout their lives. “the main benefit behind using the E-Learning instead of the traditional way is that Learners develop communication as well as personal skills such as autonomy, analytical perception, abstraction and others”(Dargham,J.2013)This quote supports my point of e-learning is a very effective way of teaching is its used in the right way.
