Practitioners

Teachers who don’t use ICT properly in the classroom won’t benefit from it themselves. Going back to personal experiences my old primary school teachers in Berlin wouldn’t use any source of technology therefor it was really boring and no one was engaged. On the other hand a lot of the practitioners in Great Britain haven’t got the skills to use ICT in the classroom properly. If the teacher’s used it properly it would benefit them as well  ‘there is recognition of the potential or actual contribution of resources to which ICT enables an easier access for the development of more ‘authentic’ teaching practices.’ (François Larose, 2009)  If the teacher is well trained with ICT it will bring the best out of them and also the pupils by enhancing their learning. It also gets the pupils to take lead in the class instead of the teachers.  If the practitioners uses the ICT in the right way it will benefit the pupil as so;
‘ICT changes the characteristics of problems and learning tasks, and hence play an important task as mediator of cognitive development’ (Syed Noor- Ul- Amin)

  1. I strongly agree with what you have said in the above, teachers must be trained well to use ICT in schools. By doing this it will benefit the learners a lot because ICT offers so many advantages if its used in an effective way as we have seen throughout the blog and during our weekly sessions. Here is a quote to support this “it must support four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts.”(Edutopia,2008) A classroom could have all the best and expensive technologies such as laptops, Ipads, Interactive white boards, mobiles and so on if they aren’t used in a effective way.

  2. Teachers in my primary and secondary school would always turn to the technician or to another member of staff for help with ICT. ‘Presently, nearly 80% of primary teachers and 80% of secondary teachers rely on their colleagues to help them keep up-to-date.’ (Dorothy Williams, 2000) As you can see there is a high percentage of teachers that need to be updated by others about the new technology. If the teacher uses the ICT properly for example using the Interactive Whiteboard for an activity in the class, the whole class will benefit from it and it’ll also keep everyone engaged. ‘If the teacher has the skills to organise and stimulate the ICT-based activity, then both whole-class and individual work can be equally effective.’ (Margaret Cox, 2003) This quote shows that if the teacher has the correct knowledge to use ICT it will benefit the pupils learning and also you’ll see positive change in their work.

  3. “Teachers create an active learning situation by assigning a complex topic and helping the students to identify the resources they need to investigate it. Then the students, rather than the teacher, explore and organize the information to be learned.” (LittleWound.2017)As you can see by this quote teachers knowledge of when to use ICT and how they make the students use it can be very beneficial. The quote shows an example where they teacher can give the students a topic which they can research them selves by using ipads, computers, laptops and so on. This will encourage the students to develop different skills rather than listening to the teacher speak all the time. Once the teacher starts to notice that the students are benefiting from using ICT in the classroom at effective times to complete tasks they will get more confident. They will know when to use the different types of technology and how to use them as well as when not to use ICT and when to teach the traditional way. “technology can only do so much. It can be transient and can become obsolete very quickly. What is a constant though, is the teacher in the classroom who across the world at this very moment and tomorrow morning will be putting the needs of their young people first, finding the best fit to ensure that everyone achieves more than they ever dreamed possible.” (Wright,P.2013) This quote shows that although ICT is a big part of education its vital a teacher knows not to rely too much on it and to always think of how to benefit the students learning.

  4. I strongly agree with you that teachers should not rely on technology too much and let the students get on with it that it benefit them through learning. Technology has changed the way of teaching where teachers let the students take over by presenting presentations or just simply using it to deliver something in front of the class ‘along with a shift of curricula from “content-centered” to “competence-based”, the mode of curricula delivery has now shifted from “teacher centered” forms of delivery to “student-centered” forms of delivery’ (Syed Noor- Ul- Amin) If the teacher hasn’t got the right knowledge e.g if the children want to use apps on the ipads and the teacher doesn’t know how to use them it would be a waste of time. It’s important that the practitioners have the right knowledge about the technology because it’ll be more engaging and also fun for the students.
