Multimodal and Multimedia

In education students learn in different ways which is why multimedia and multimodality is so important to be included in lessons. There are many different ways to use these which can be very beneficial to the learning. For example using multimedia technology such as an interactive white board can include many different modes to include in a session. The whiteboard can show multimodal video clips, images, voice audio‘s, writings in different colour and so on which engage the students.  This is a quote that supports the statement above “As such, multimedia can be used to develop a more inclusive and engaging curriculum, appealing to visual, aural and kinaesthetic learners, thereby counteracting some differences in student performance” (Birch & Burnett, 2009; St Hill, 2000).  By looking at the video bellow its also clear of the benefits of multimedia and multimodality in education.

  1. I totally agree with you. It plays an important role in today’s educational system. It develops communication and ability to think. It is important to use multimedia and multimodality in the classroom. Here’s a quote to show why;
    ‘The basic aim is to use media and multimedia for the emancipation of development of pupil's rights and in order to have a more humanistic approach in teaching.’ (Anita Roncevic, 2009)
    Multimedia benefits the teacher as well. For example the teacher could use videos from youtube to show different stuff to the class. It also gives the opportunity for children to use a variety of technology and also to enhance their learning. It also widens their knowledge and helps them with reality in the outside world. ‘Through multimedia, we motivate pupils to learn by using their different senses, and through audio-visual presentation of information, the pupils obtain clearer and more complete knowledge of the outside world and themselves.’ (Anita Roncevic, 2009)

    1. As stated by us in this blog, there are a lot of advantages of using multimedia and multimodality in education. But there is another side of the argument which states that there are some disadvantages. To start using multimedia and multimodality by using technology can take up teaching time. For example, using things to suit how the students learn such as YouTube videos, podcasts, websites and so on takes time to find and do. On the other hand, as we see by the next quote multimedia and multimodality can be so beneficial even if it’s used in an non-technology way. “Not all students learn at the same pace. Research tells us that when learners are able to control the pace of the presentation they learn more. Multimedia presentations are more effective when the learner has the ability to interact with the presentation, by slowing it down or by starting and stopping it. “(Gilakjani et al, 2011) Another beneficial element of multimedia is that there is so many ways it can be implemented. For example, by using stuff like Ipads, Televisions, Books, Newspapers, websites, mobile phones and so on it can offer different modes which will suit the ‘VAK’ learning styles of different students. This is a quote that shows this Multimedia has been successfully applied to many courses in order to provide a wide variety of learning styles or modalities (Birch & Gardiner, 2005).
      Can you think of examples in which multimodality and multimedia helps different learning styles?

  2. There are many examples of which multimodality and multimedia can help different learning styles. The obvious one is the interactive whiteboard where showing pictures and videos would be beneficial for the visual learners. The interactive whiteboard is beneficial for all learning styles as its capable to get everyone involved and engaged. Here’s a quote from (Smart Technologies, 2006) ‘Interactive whiteboards support many different learning styles and are used in a variety of learning environments, including those catering to students with hearing and visual impairments.’ (Smart Technologies, 2006) This shows that the IWB does help all learning styles. If the teacher sets out a task for the class for example a project. The verbal learners would use different modes such as newspapers and books which still come under the term ‘media’ but the mode would be the texts and images. By using the newspapers as a media in the classroom it will enhance the pupils vocabulary and their knowledge on the outside world. ‘Newspaper-based activities engage students in interesting and enjoyable activities and they also encourage them to further reading.’ (Vavla, Laureta 2009) Also by looking at this quote it shows that using newspapers will encourage the students to read more in their own time.
