Podcasts and Vodcasts

Podcasts and vodcasts can be very beneficial in education for students and teachers if they are used in an effective way. It may depend on the age of the students in which one of these you may use and how. “More schools are opting to use podcasting in their classroom as it stimulates learning through creative means and open lines of communication. A closer look at podcasting reveals the following benefits: Ease of Accessibility, Archive of lessons, Learning on the go, Updates and creative learning.”(Professional Learning Board 2016) As you can see this is a benefit for teachers and learners as the pupils can access the information at any time without asking the teacher, therefore there is less pressure on the teacher and they can let the students to learn more independently .Also while listening and creating to the podcasts it develops news skills for the students benefit.

  1. Using podcasts in the classroom can be very boring as we saw in the seminar for this topic. Making vodcasts are a lot more enjoyable for the Pupils. Mercenfeld Primary School have a great idea by posting weekly vodcasts on the school website. This shows the parents what they’re doing in school and also gives them a chance to ask other pupil questions. By clicking the link below you'll be able to see the video;

    By doing this weekly vodcast it benefits their learning skills especially their communicational skills. Their vocabulary strengthens as well. Using vodcasts benefits the teacher by letting the pupils get on with it and let them problem solve. If pupils miss a lesson the teacher could make a vodcast and put it online so that the pupils can catch up on it.

  2. After looking at the journal from Robin H Kay (2012) it’s clear that podcasts can be very beneficial as you have stated above. Adding to this in the journal it states what the pupils have said about using vodcasts. The pupils stated in the research in the article that watching vodcats were engaging, enjoyable to watch and satisfying. (K,Robing.2012) AS you can see by this quote this will also benefit the teacher. If You have pupils that are motivated and are engaged in the lesson then it’s easier to teach because the pupils feel like this about vodcasts then teachers can use them when its suitable and know that they help the pupils.
    Do you think there are any more disadvantages of podcasts and vodcasts?

  3. Yes there are disadvantages of using podcasts and vodcasts. Obviously the main one is if the technology breaks down then no one would be able to use it. Technology isn’t a reliable source. It’s important that the teacher picks the right podcasts, making sure that they’re not boring and that it keeps the pupils engaged and occupied. If there’s disability in the classroom for example disability with hearing, it wouldn’t be the right thing to do. As on the other hand using a vodcast would keep everyone engaged. I’ve found a quote to back my point that vodcasts will benefit hearing-impaired individuals. ‘Transcripts or video versions should be made available to hearing-impaired individuals, who will benefit less from audio materials.’(Clare Edwards, 2016) There aren’t many disadvantages of using podcasts and vodcasts in education. There are many ways of how vodcasting and podcasting can enhance the pupils learning, are there any examples you can come up with?

  4. Yes, for example the teacher could use interesting podcasts and vodcasts when explaining a topic or during a discussion and the pupils may be able to make notes on them in their own time. The podcasts and vodcasts will always be saved and the students can access at any time. Also they may be able to enhance the learning by creating podcasts and vodcasts by creating them and showing them in front of the class. By doing this it will improve:
    • Team work • Story boarding • Script writing • Rehearsing • Time keeping • Drafting and editing • Accuracy and presentation (Stewart,G.2010)
